Hacker group Anonymous has been threatening since February to "shut the Internet down" by launching a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDOS) on Saturday (31 March). The attack will target the world's 13 DNS servers so that Internet users will be unable to perform domain name lookups , thus temporarily disabling the Internet.

Uhm, call me crazy, but this has to be a joke? I can't see the Internet being that vulnerable.

Seems like a very silly threat that failed to materialise. Apart from the unbelievable resources it'd require to pull of such a feat, telling everybody when and how you're going to do something of this magnitude seems daft.

Do these kids just enjoy spending time in FBI interrogation rooms or something? :/

It would be an interesting social experiment. I blame the Internet for a lot of problems today, I'd like to see how some people survive in a society which they know little to nothing about (reality).

Oh but who are we kidding? This is anonymous, they're all talk.

Good thing I have my own windows server running DNS.

Oh, wait... It's April 2nd and there was no attack. Anybody surprised by this?

Not to mention even if you shut down the top-level DNS servers, the mid- and low-level servers still maintain a cache. Any sensible ISP, upon seeing the top-level servers go down, would just extend the cache timer. It's not a perfect solution, but it's better than returning "Me no know!" when somebody asks where google is.

Can't foresee that even if they succeeded that it would be down for very long.

That is exactly was I was thinking when I read that. I think it was to see who would believe it. Take for example when someone tried to convince me that Chancellor Corina Casanova had been assassinated. You have to be stupid if you think I will fall for your pranks. Please try to be more original in the future. :cort:

There was an attack, but it failed miserably. About the only notable site taken down that day was 4chan.

Cannot happen, I am sure there are like 5 backup DNS servers if one goes down.
