What type of DVD are you trying to play? Some drives have problems reading DVD-R or DVD+/-RW discs, just as the older CD-ROM drives had problems reading CD-R and CD-RW discs. How old is the drive? Sometimes they just get so much use they begin to refuse to read discs - normal wear and tear. If the drive is modular, then I'd suggest replacing it with a standard laptop DVD drive, if not, you could well be stuck with it.
