Has anyone upgraded their laptop's hard drive? If so, could I possibly get some advice on this. I have an Alienware, older model with a 40 gig hard drive. I saw a package from Hitachi with a 180 gig model, complete with cables and a how-to manual, but it was like $300 and I think that's a rip.
I don't really know how to do this. I mean I'll search on google but I'll get tons of hits and I don't know enough to tell the good links from the bad ones. I'm hoping to get atleast a 100 gig model, more is better. I've seen 250 gig models and I think I saw a 500 as well.
Do prices vary a lot from desktop HDs to Laptop HDs? What about difficult of install?

All you should need is a screwdriver. Remove the original drive out of the back, attach the existing cable and caddy (mounting bracket) to the new drive, and put it back in. Easy as pie. As far as price goes, laptop HDD's are typically 1.5 to 2 times the price of your average desktop (3.5") HDD. $300 for that "kit" is a big rip. If I were you, I'd buy an OEM model from Newegg and save some cash.
Big thanks for the install advice. I've been told that upgrading anything beyond memory in laptops is difficult and dangerous. Idk how reliable this information is, but that's what I've always been told.
How do I find out what kind of HD my laptop uses, either it's IDE or Sata, right?
Yes it would be either SATA or ATA-6 (laptop lingo for Ultra ATA100). I'm gonna guess based on you saying that your laptop is an older model, that it is ATA-6. But you can tell by looking at the cable. The ATA-6 cable is the same as an IDE cable (wide and flat) with a large wide connector. While the SATA cable is going to be much smaller; more like a half of an inch wide.

ATA-6 and ATA 100 (IDE) are the same yes. Either will work in you laptop assuming that it is not SATA equipped. They just have different names; ATA-6 for 2.5" (laptop), ATA 100 for 3.5" (internal desktop).

Other questions though:
Is there a difference in heat, reliability, life in laptop HDs compared to desktop HDs? Like I see that the largest IDE hard drives on newegg are just 250 gigs, which is a lot and a vast improvement over my 40 gig but I was hoping for more like a 320 or a 500, anyway why do the larger HDs generate so much heat? It is just because the laptop is such a closed space that all the heat builds up so quickly?
Actually IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics, he was just stating that all 3.5" drives are internal desktop drives
