I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop and it is starting to cause me problems. It is still under warranty, so I am considering bringing it into Future Shop, but their common solution is to wipe the HD and reinstall the original config. I don't want this and I know that shouldn't solve the problem. What is happening, is that occassionally when I turn on the laptop, it goes through the initial bios screen, then it will go to a black screen with just a cursor at the top. At this point it will start to beep constantly and just sits there like that. It is a steady set of beeps, no set pattern. When the laptop finally starts, when I open something like IE, I get a series of ````````````` in the search bar, like there is a stuck key. I cleaned out the area and the problem still persists. I appreciate any help that you guys have for me. Thanks.

Yeah, it does sound like a stuck key, replacing the keyboard is a sinch, especially if it is under warrenty. If they tell you they have to reformat your harddrive to replace a key, I would suggest calmly leaving the store, and burning it down...

If you don't want to take it to the store, simply take a little flat-head and pop off the `/~ key, I doubt you use that key all that often. Be carefull though, sometimes that might void your warrenty.

well i agree with NoOdLe, popping off the `/~ key might fix it, but that might void your warrenty, however as long as you are able to put it back on how are they ever gona know you took it off ;) but im thinking if the key itself isnt stuck down in a down position then taking it off probably wouldnt put whatever it presses down on back in the up position getting a new keyboard might be what you have to do but i would take that key off to try first, cause its obviously cheeper, and wouldnt hurt

Does it do the same thing in notepad and word and such? it does sound like a stuck key, the beeping you hear on boot up is probably a keyboard error beep.

It will do the same thing in any program that allows a user input when started. It only does that for the first program started, then all is fine. I will have to take it in to the store to see if they can fix it without formatting it. It will have to wait for a while though, we are taking a vacation and need the laptop to download any pictures that we take. I will see if I can pop off the key without harming it.

Well, I tried removing just the key and cleaning out the area under it. Had a hell of a time putting the key back on, but it appears to be working. I will have to leave it for a while before I can tell for sure if that fixed it. When I started it this time, I opened IE and did NOT get the `````````````` that I was getting before. Fingers are crossed that it worked.
