With those motherboards that have two video card slots, do the video cards need to be the same type? Some guy said that the other day, and I just wanna know if it's true, because I never heard of that before. Plus, I don't wanna get a fucked up computer because I didn't know any better, in the event that I actually do get one of those fancy-schmancy motherboards.

Yes, the cards have to be indentical for SLI or Crossfire which is what you're thinking of.

Not entirely, for SLI the GPUs need to match but other things can be slightly different. It doesn't have to be the same brand card, clock speed, or even memory capacity, though the latter they recommend matching if possible as the lowest capacity will be used. It also doesn't matter if the feature set such as Vivo are not the same. http://www.slizone.com/page/slizone_faq#c3

One thing: how come it doesn't need to be the same brand card? I don't think an Nvidia card would work with an ATI card. Is there something I'm not understanding that everyone else is?

Well, In SLI they do not have to be exactly identical; that's just the recommended setup.

In order for SLI to work you need to have two or more cards with the same GPU. However, SLI can work with cards from different manufacturers and cards with difference VRAM sizes; but in these cases, the system will force both cards to run at the specifications of the card with the lowest specs. So if you had a card with 512MB of RAM and one with 256MB of RAM, both cards could only use up to 256MB of RAM. Also, you have to use CoolBits in order to force the cards to use a specific amount of memory... otherwise it won't work.

I'm not really sure about CrossFire as I could care less about ATI technology, but I think the cards do have to be exactly the same.

And you are getting confused about the difference between SLI and CrossFire. ONLY two nVidia cards can be used together OR two ATI cards together. When we talk about manufacturers or brands, we mean the companies like Sapphire, Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, XFX, BFG, EVGA, etc.

Also, the system determines what card setups can be used. Current Intel or ATI bridges can support CrossFire, while only nVidia bridges can support SLI.

That would be the brand of the chipset, not the card itself. The card brand meaning Evga, XFX, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.

That's not true, not even for Crossfire, you can use use different cards as long they have the same GPU so you can use HD3850 with 3870
