Do a benchmark with a bunch of programs running.

Free up ram using a program that advertises itself as having the ability. (Do not have it close any other programs or anything, just tell it to free up ram).

Redo the benchmark.

Post the before and after screenshots.

Why? That's not how the program works, so that would be pointless.

Read my posts again, i'm not talking about all programs that claim to do that, i'm talking about the way AlacrityPC works. Your trying to argue with me against something i'm not even saying.

You said it "defrags" (which doesn't make sense for ram) ram. This makes me think of the programs that free "unused" ram by paging it to disk.

coolduderyan07;4775175Honestly, at this point. DX10 can blow me. Barely any of my games take advantage of DX10s capabilities, with that being crysis and stalker clear sky. They most definitely don't even scratch the surface of what DX10 can do and only represent a higher level of what DX9 is capable of. Disregard what I said about dx10.

I took a look at rocketdock and xplorer2 lite, and while they are effective.. I think XP will suffice. Thank you for the advice, ill probably dust off my old xp disk and throw vista across the room until I get 2gb more of ram/and or grind up the vista disc into confetti and gather palm leaves for when windows 7 makes it's grand entrance :].

If you dont want your DVD/ key I'll take it off your hands =)

I dont know what the big deal is about vista. I had it run perfectly fine on an athlon 2800+ with 1gb of ram. And seriously, dont bitch about ram. You can get 4gb of ram for $30 so theres no way that its too expensive.

^What this man says. If you ever took the time to read anything about Vista, you would know that it manages RAM intelligently. The RAM that's taken up is because Vista recognizes files that are commonly used, and even what time of day they're usually used, and puts them into RAM when it thinks you'll need them. That way, when you start up a more RAM-intensive program (like a game), if you look at a performance meter, your usage doesn't go up very much at all. This is because SuperFetch (Vista's RAM management system) makes room for it since you're not using the other files that are usually stored in RAM.

And if you're really that bothered, 4GB of RAM is indeed cheap.

I know what vista does with ram. I read up on it. My experience lately has been less than spectacular with my current setup. It worked smoothly when first installed and put together, but not lately. This may be because the ram itself isn't top of the line and neither is the harddrive. When I run intense games, the screen jitters around, it doesn't lag. I'm just not so fond of the response time with games and normal processing. My Q6600 is at 3.0ghz, and I can't overclock my ram without BSOD somewhere along the way. I have a 9800GTX+ at 800 core frequency. I had better response times on my dell with pentium 4 at 3.0ghz and this leads me to the conclusion that it's either my hard drive doesn't transfer information as efficiently as it should, or I need to throw more ram in. Now the easiest option for me would be to use an operating system, just for gaming, that didn't need to use so much ram therefore negating the information overload in which my harddrive needed to use it's pagefile to run the program/game. I'm sorry for seeming to put vista down, but I shouldn't be getting this much lag in processing time for no reason whatsoever. All my virus definitions are up to date, I clean my junk files daily, I run a series of peerblockers, and honestly the ram and hard drive aren't THAT bad. I'm not bitching about the cost of ram, I know it's cheap, I just want to effectively sort out my problem which at first glance looked like the OS and my 2gb of ram. SORRY.

It's probably not your RAM. I ran games just fine on a 2.2GHz E2200 dual-core with 2GB RAM and an 8800GT 512MB on Windows Vista. Even Crysis ran fine on medium settings, at 1680x1050 resolution.

Well the pagefile was at 3067mb, and i'm not sure if that's normal or not. I put it down to 200 and things are moving a tiny bit smoother. So if it isn't my ram, them most likely my harddrive? I'm pretty sure this is it.

Having your page file too large can hurt your performance, because the page file is much slower than RAM, and should only be used when you go over 100% RAM usage. Generally, your page file should be no larger than your RAM amount.

That hard drive looks decent. Not exceptionally high-performance, but not bad either. I don't think that's your problem either.

Hm, ill run some ridiculous games to see exactly what's being maxed. I'll report back soon.

EDIT: Okay apparently my Ram usage maxed out at 1.85GB of 2GB, so that's not bad at all. I guess ill keep looking into it. Thanks for the support so far.
