Ok so I have a compaq laptop, and lost the recovery cd's, I tried using my bros HP recovery discs and didn't work, any idea how I can clear everything on my hard drive except windows so I can get the out of the box "FEEL" again?

Did you try to contact HP's customer service to get another copy of your recovery CDs ?

Well you may try to locate some i386 folder somewhere on the hard drive : if there is one, it should contain the installation files. Then you may delete everything except it and reinstall with it starting from a boot floppy... yet even if the folder is present, nothing warrants that the files didn't get corrupted or infected by a virus.

If you haven't called Compaq about replacement disks, do that. It'll be the most reliable method.
