Ok, so, for now, I'm thinking of getting the following: - AMD Athlon AM2 64-bit 3800 - 1GB Ram - 200 / 250 GB HDD - GeForece 256MB Graphics Card (can anyone suggest a good card that meets this spec)

In addition, would an 32-bit 3800 be good do you think, or should I go higher?

You can't get 32-bit 3800 CPUs (or any other current AMD processor in that flavour as a matter of fact). They discontinued their mainstream 32-bit line quite some time ago. If you want to go any higher in the performance ladder in that regard then you should almost certainly be looking at a Core 2 Duo.

As for a graphics card, I'd recommend a high-end GeForce 7 series card (anything from a 7600 to a 7900 should suit you fine), seeing as in lieu of the release of the 8 series prices are being slashed on previous generation hardware. It's a brilliant time to snatch up a bargain before nVidia does something silly like discontinue them.

Even though Vista does consume a ridiculous amount of drive space I don't see why anyone would need to justify a 500gb drive solely on the size of the operating system. If you have an obscene amount of music or video clips though then that's fair enough.

You don't need to end every sentence with an exclamation!

:p

I'll recommend the nVidia 8600 Ultra for a graphics card. It's scheduled to be released at $139 US, I dunno about UK. It's DirectX 10-compatible, and that's going to start making a difference. You can still run your old DX9 games, too.

Graphics aperture size isn't nearly as important as clock frequencies, but by the significant rate of game development equals increased texture sizes, so I can only assume most new graphics cards are going to become 512mb as the norm.
