I'm looking to replace my slowing and beat up 8460w. I'm looking for something with a large screen, can play games at a decent frame rate at 1080 with recording software running in the background, and if a second on board drive is possible...that'd be awesome. Budget isn't really an issue as I'm merely investigating what is out there...but I'd rather not spend 6k if I don't have to as I'm about to drop a grand on my desktop for upgrades.

I find it weird how people want gaming machines in laptop form.

Ultimately a gaming laptop will cost more and perform worse. You'd do far better putting the money into the desktop unless there's a reason you really need to be portable.

I also do a fair amount of video editing and photo editing away from the house...that's about the only other reason I need the power in laptop form.

There are a lot of options. Depends on just how much power you want out of it. Kind of into the Razer Blade at the moment. If I didn't just buy a new laptop I'd be getting one of those for myself. What better way to look like a nerd than with an overpriced Mac knockoff running Windows 8?

Have you considered a remote desktop solution instead?
