I currently have 1gb of ddr 400 ram, its two 512 sticks running in dual channel and i want to put a 1gb stick in (i have 4 slots) and wondering if id lose the dual channel if i put one of the 512s in the other slots.

If you try to put the 1GB stick in opposite of one of the 512MB sticks in dual channel slots, you may run into some problems. Put the 1GB stick in the 3rd slot - and yes in most cases you will lose dual channel mode that way. If you can get (2) more 512MB sticks instead of (1) 1GB stick, that would be the way to go - you would maintain dual channel mode that way.

That is a wise choice.
