I agree that Windows can totally blow, but again if you don't understand why it blows how can it ever be fixed? It can't and essentially we turn into a society that rolls over and simply accepts the fact that only new things are worth spending anytime on. Oh wait, we have already become that society. :bawl: Hmmmmm. Maybe we should re-name the "Tech Discussion" thread to "When to re-install Windows" :naughty:

could someone tell me why you cant move a hard drive with windows xp pro on it from one pc to another with different specs?

for example say i have this old dell and i want to move the hard drive to a custom built pc with an abit kv7-v mobo, radeon 9800SE, and 1GB of kingston ram, and an AMD athlon 3000+.

Because Windows XP activation will bitch at you saying the hardware has changed dramatically, so it locks itself.

Thing is, to prevent multiple installs with the same key, every XP installation creates a unique hardware ID, based on what you have installed in your system. If you change too much hardware (you're allowed three modifications, not including a change of motherboard IIRC), it will lock itself and demand that you re-activate it.
