I remember one of my professors telling me that it's basically a monopoly, and that if more OS that could compete with Windows were out there, they wouldn't be so quick to release new versions of Windows. Totally beside the point, but still.

Yep Win 10 was a surprise but the actual software is pretty good although I have not tested it for long. I am waiting for AMD to release proper drivers so I can use eyefinity. It does do multi monitor well and it even does the allows different wallpapers per monitor. It seems stable and responsive although I did have a few issues with the store and internet explorer but apart from that it is good. I have not tried any gaming yet but as soon as I can I will.

I recently got a new PC with Windows 8 preinstalled. It is a serious pain compared to Windows 7, so I'm looking forward to 10. Or maybe I'll eventually just convert to Linux. The only reason I keep using Windows is gaming.

Is it though?

PC's are only a small percentage of the personal computing market. They're mainly used by businesses and gamers. It's a large share of a small segment of the market. There are far more people using Android, a lot of people using iOS, for example. These are all still operating systems and one Windows competes directly with in the consumer space. Besides, if they had more competition, they'd want to release updates more rapidly and at a lower cost, like Android and iOS. Which, by the way, is what they are doing.

Yeah, Windows 8 does all of those things too, but of course, it's strengths are outweighed by AGH FUCK METRO.

Also, Fancypants, please don't switch to Linux. You're a sensible lad.

I'll do what I've always done and stick with Windows 7 until the world moves on.

Well MS is hoping that this will be another Win 7 and it could well be right. Vista and win 8 were both innovative in that they changed how windows looked and acted. They also changed how we use it and the folder structure but they performed dreadfully and the public did not put up with them. They then released Windows 7 that was so stable that it should have been sent to sort out the Israel - Palestine problem and now MS is hoping that Win 10 is the same to win 8 that win 7 was to vista.

A lot of people in this thread need to check out Classic Shell. While you shouldn't need third-party addons to make Win8 usable, it really is a great OS once you put the start menu back in its place.

(Honestly though I just use it without it, I only use the start screen like once a day anyway.)

Oh, and:

Windows 10 is rumored to be the last major release and they're going to periodic updates like OSX (and like Win8.1)
