Alright I'm planning on getting a motherboard+cpu upgrade and my budget is under 500 dollars. Hear what I have in mind? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2280515&CatId=2396 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2366178 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1026780&Sku=C13-6034 Now are those chips compatiable with each? Now I hear that whenever there is a motherboard upgrade the whole OS needs to be re-installed why is that? Do you need the OS disc to reinstall or it can be done without it? Becuase I don't have one.

Well, eventually, you're gonna want to add another gig of ram, but that can wait.

Although it would go over your budget, I would get the E6600 Core 2 Duo. It has twice the L2 cache as the E6400.

But you shouldn't need to reinstall the OS. If it's Windows XP or 2003 you will have to re-activate.

No can do, snice I now gotta buy a Windows XP package. Hopefully I'll be able to find one laying around. I know 1 gig is becoming a bit old now but what can you do when your on a tight budget. Mabey I'll buy a 2 GB kit if I don't have to spend money on a OS. Speaking of OS whens Vista coming out, and how much is it?

EDIT:

I do have XP Home ED. I do plan on going up to vista sometime in the futuer.

You've got to be joking... At the very least wait for well... quite a while when Vista comes out so that Microsoft can iron out at least some of the bugs which it is bound to have.

The home/single user versions of Vista ought to be decently bug-free by the time they're released since the coporate editions are shipping soon.
