I have that stupid MSN spyware that sends messages to your friends about weight loss ads. Windows defender and nod32 didn't pick it up. Any suggestions.

Depends on which one you got. I got one of those a couple years ago and was forced to reformat. Sometimes they start as just spamming people then they become a source for tons of Trojans =/

Stop using MSN Messenger (It's chocked full of bloatware and ads anyways) and use something like Trillian or Pidgen

Trillian is crap, Pidgin has a bad GUI and not as many nice features. MSN is fine, the latest isn't bloated or anything, and if users knew how to use it, they'd realize the same.

User Malwarebytes Anti Malware, In combo with ComboFix and SDFix in Safemode, Run CCleaner first to remove all shit, empty your prefetch, Windows/Temp and < Username >/Temp And your done and dusted, should take less then an hour and is a guaranteed fix, Virus's are like chicks, easy to get rid of

My dad, who's been working with computers for nearly as long as some of us have been alive, says that MSN is a great way to get a virus, and that you should uninstall as soon as you can. I've never heard anyone else say it, but if you're getting spyware from MSN, it sounds like my dad might be partially right.

It is a great way, if your an idiot and accept files without asking, or click on sus looking web links. But then a web browser or taking a file on a usb from a friend is no different. Its just a bit of common sense.

On the other hand, it does have its own scanner built into it, It doesn't allow unsafe files (exes, macros etc) it warns you quite obviously about clicking suspecious links.

The only reason its so easy and common to get a virus, is the same reason why windows has viruses in the first place, its the most common program out. If it was used by < 10% of people like mac OSs maybe, or other crappy programs like pidgin and trillian, then it would be just as safe.

On that note, How is Trillian, Pidgin or any other IM program for windows safer?! You still click hyperlinks sent, you still accept files sent, it still requires a virus scanner to be safe, you still get infected by it. Just most viruses try to send back by MSN, not Trillian, You recieve just as easy, just not send as easy, Thus, Getting rid of it now, its pointless, getting rid of it at all is pointless, You'll still get the virus just as easily in any IM program.

End Of Story - Use Common Sense, and You'll Be Safe.

Then you dad should stop working on computers. He is partially right though. ANY messenger program can cause you to get a virus if you ( the user) doesn't know what you are doing.

I have NEVER gotten a virus from msn. Reason being? I am suspicious of crap coming through.
