im thinking it could be a number of things could be a dirty lens, defective drive, or a dirty/bad ribbon cable id try goin to walmart or any other electronics store and buy a lens cleaner, and if you have one switch the ribbon cable on it

Well, CD/DVD players and burner are pretty damn cheap, so it wouldn't be a huge loss if you did need to by a new one.

But, do try to take some steps to get it working again. I would try to (gentley) clean the lens like Cursedon recomended.

You might try to see if you can get any driver updates for the CD-Rom drive (although it shouldn't really need any).

You sure it isn't just a dirty or scratched CD? Or does this happen with all media you insert into the drive?

If so then, as others suggested I'd say try a lens cleaner. Failing that...new DVD drives aren't horrendously expensive these days.

I still have to order a new one - I've had two Samsung DVD+/-RW drives now, both of which ended up dying.

So far I tried out 3 discs and all of them failed to be read.

Have you tried checking the laser to see if it's faulty?

I would rather say it's a pure coincidence that I considered XCP in the first place, but then I realised AudioSlave CDs include such. Check your CDs for the below images.

Also see these...

I have a bad feeling Sony has screwed up your drive. If so, see here...

take it as an excuse to extort your parents about buying a new PC for you. Can you say Alienware?

Drives are cheap, there's no reason to replace the PC. Oh, and Alienware sucks compared to what someone with a bit of knowledge can do.
