ok, i have a laptop at work a customer brought in, they downloaded some screensavers and when they did their computer SLOWED down, to the point of almost freezing, and the screen resolution got changed from widescreen to normal. when you try and boot up you really cant do anything, now i booted in safe mode and it runs fine, i ran her version of norton (but in safe mode it wont tell me how old the deffinitions files are, so it may be 4 years old for all i know) and i ran ccleaner, but it did NOTHING. so i rip out the hard drive to put into one of our desktops to scan with stuff i knew was current, and my boss usually wants me to because it is a lil more efficient, so anyway i plug it in using an ide to laptop adapter and nothing, so i remember western digital needs the jumper in otherwise it trys to run as a master, pull up the jumper configuration and set it to slave, the desktop still doesnt recognize the drive, troubleshot on westerndigitals website a while and nothing came up, so i called them up gave em the serial and were like "oh.. we cant help you, this drive is for asia, not north america" so then i get online with dell and the tech says he cant help me, western digital would have to, but like i said they wont, i then plugged it back into the laptop, where it works fine (and by fine i mean it works, but still has the virus or spyware or w/e) ran western digital data lifeguard tools and it says its 100% fine, now friday when i go back in im sure i could probably fix it through the laptop if i have to, it will just take longer, but does anyone have any idea why this happened incase i have to do it again? oh yea, i tried plugging it into several computers, and tried configuring the bios manually and nothing

the laptop is running windows xp home, our computer is running pro i think, maybe home, never actually really payed attention, but it shouldt really matter, if the laptop is running as a slave it should just show the files regardless

If it's being picky about master/slave, try giving it it's own IDE channel?

With the hard drive still in the laptop, you could always try a system restore in safe mode to before the programs were installed. That fixed a resolution problem I had just about a few days ago.

Switching the drives around might sound like a good idea, and in some cases it may be, but it doesn't help a diagnosis. You won't be able to get and information regarding the setup of the laptop, for instance anything relating to the registry. The only good reason to do this would be in the case of exposing rootkit files.

Personally, I recommend putting the drive back in the laptop and have a look at the following link, perform all necessary steps and hopefully the problem will be resolved afterwards...

no offense to you guys but i think alot of you are misunderstanding me, i dont need help with fixing the virus in the laptop, if it comes down to it im sure i can get it done through the laptop, and im not even too concerned that i cant get it in the desktop, i just put alot of time into trying to get it in there (probably a lil more than i should have :p ) and i got no result, so that just pissed me off, and i wanted to know if anyone knew of a concrete reason as to why it wouldnt work, especially considering if i ever needed to try it again with a different customer whos stuff we needed to backup or something i want to know how to get it to work
