The Y510p with Windows 8 has a fried motherboard so it won't turn on. Given this, how do I get to its files so I can back them up? I've got an 8 year old desktop PC that I'm gonna put the files on. That's all it's good for since it can't even run games that only need 1 GB of RAM.

Take the hard drive out Plug it into the other computer

Easy enough to do, it's all SATA these days, if it's a laptop hard drive it might be easier to get one of those USB Sata drive dock things if the case / pc can't take 2.5inch drives but you should be fine.

Will a crappy Windows XP desktop that doesn't even have 1 GB of ram be able to take the hard drive of a fancy new Windows 8 laptop?

yep, as they say a hard drive is a hard drive. Not actually sure who says that but meh. Just make sure it does not try to boot from that hard drive.

The drive is 2.5 inches. Too small for my PC. Guess I need to get a SATA-to-USB thingy. Anyone got any recommendations?

For the purpose of simply backing up shit, you probably don't even need to bother with really setting it up. And that's what god invented string for.

Should be fine as long as it uses good old MBR partition system and not GPT.
