I am looking in to getting a new computer so i can finally play some of the new pc games. I have a $1000 budget for the pc only I already have a monitor. I would like help picking out a decent pc. I went to Compaq.com and built a computer just to see what I could get but I am not sure how good it is. For gaming that computer will be breakfest if yu are a bit more serious than for starters yu can grab alot better video card say a 7600 GT or X1600 should do yu well.

OMG No. Not a good build at all. good amount on ram, but try to shoot for 2 gigs since your building now. Doesn't sound like your going to be doing any OC'ing, so you can get away with value ram in ddr400/pc3200. In which case 2 gigs will run you no more than $150. The best chip for gaming and most preferred is the AMD64 in Socket939. harddisk is good sized. In terms of a video card, that is not very good at all. the latest offerings is dependant on your budget. But this is THE pinnacle of your gaming rig and doesn't matter if you have the latest and greatest in everything else if you have a crappy video card you may as well stick to tetris. 300$ range= Nvidia 7900gt 450+$ range= Ati 1900xt or the 7900gtx. My bias is towards the ATi. IQ owns. Other things to consider is a good PSU. Antec is staple reliable powersupply company that is descently priced and can be had from 60-80. don't skimp on this piece either.

If it's the one I think it is, that CPU is crap. If I remember right, the only 3.06GHz P4 is one of the old Northwood B core ones running at 533MHz FSB. It's a four year old chip, and it wasn't great at the time. I have one, and you're much better off with a modern P4 running with an 800MHz FSB. There may be a newer one running at that speed, but since you can't get 3.06GHz from an 800MHz (or 1066MHz) FSB, it must be a 533MHz model.

Er, sorry if I've just confused you; in summary that 3.06GHz P4 is rubbish, get something else.

Honestly, why are you using Compaq? Using someone like Dell would be a much better idea...you at least have a small chance of ending up with a decent system.

Have you ever heard of cyberpowerpc.com? They seem to have some decent computers but I have never heard of them and dont know how trustworthy they are. Thanks for the help so far.

If you're gaming, the specs within your price range are rather...out of date. A standard 6600 in a $1000 PC is simply a joke. One of the $1000 'gaming' ones (for both AMD and Intel) even has a 6200, and that's a shocking card for games.

Well they have a good enough core spec, but by the time you've added a decent graphics card you may as well just buy a better system to begin with.
