My advice would be to have several rows of programmable macro keys on the side or top, some basic media controls like Volume, and pause/play. Another thing I would suggest is either moving or having a way to disable that annoying windows key, I can't tell you how many times that thing has screwed me up because I hit it instead of Ctrl or Alt. I'd also suggest having keys with lights in them, not behind them, otherwise the bright light in the cracks between the keys would make it impossible to see the symbols in a dark room. For instance, have they actual keys a non-transparent color, and then the letters and numbers on the key transparent.
I tawt I taw a puddy tat...

Adding onto the currently available features of gaming keyboards:
--Backlighting color can be changed from blue, white, red, green or off at the click of a button/switch.
--Has a color LCD screen which among other things, can be setup to send/receive email/IMs while never leaving the game. Also capable of displaying in-game player/server/map info as well as in-game map if applicable.
--Ability to rebind standard keys within the keyboards software to overcome flawed games which don't allow for custom control configurations. This would be loaded as a profile when a specific game's .exe is loaded, unloaded upon game exit/minimize/crash.
--Keys are backlit with mini lcd screens beneath their surface. During normal conditions, the keys would read standard like WASD, Tab, Shift (etc), but the keyboard is smart and recognizes what's onscreen at any time, and when BF2 is running, the bound keys would read as arrow signs, shoot, jump (etc). LCD lighting, fonts and symbols would be highly configurable to suit the user's taste.
