I am going to get a new video card for my B-day I was wondering witch one of the two would be faster(7800 GTX 512 or 256 7900 GT) and better in price and for for my pc and also this is going to be the last card Im going to buy for a long time so it better be a damn good one. my spec are: Intel 915GAV MOBO Intel 3 GHz HT 540 (those cards I listed should show my cpu is made of :P) 768 mb ddr333 (this might be a bit of bottneck but with a fast card it shounld be noticable) 200 Gig HD half free (if yr woundering) BFG 6600 GT 128 MB (Not going to make it through oblivion and other SM 3 games very well) Windows XP Thanks

7800 GTX 512 GDDR3 is faster than 7900 GT, thus being more expensive. 7900 GT also only got 256 GDDR3.

As the abobe poster said the 7800GTX is faster, by a lot then the 7800GT. But i would go for the 7900GTX. Also that RAM is not enough. Trust me you need about 1gig ram and now 2gig is becoming the standard, although i will stay with 1gig for another year. So ask for some RAM also for your bday. I think you got 1 stick of 256MB so i would get rid of that and just get another 512MB stick, or jst buy another 512mb or whatever, ur choice.

Most programs don't even take advantage of that much videocard RAM yet. Comparing a 7800GTX 256 to a 7900GT, the 7900GT beats the 7800 though.

It's "Built for Vista", but it's not DX-10 hardware compliant.

I think the 7800gtx 512 cards are still nearly as expensive as the 7900gtx, so I would opt for the 7900gtx for that kind of money. The 7900gt is pretty good card for it's price, but it's been problematic for some people (thankfully not for me).

In a nutshell, for your gpu choices above on your current setup, I'd opt for the 7900gt.

7900GTX is about 10% faster than 7800GTX 512.

And as also said the G71 core was sort of build for windows vista but lacks DirectX 10.
