Can anyone give me a basic idea of how to overclock. I have a ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128 MB and would like to overclock it to run half life 2 better. I downloaded an overclocking tool a while ago but didn't know what i was doing. Also, anyone know how to overclock a AMD Athlon 2000+??? Because i recently found out with my current motherboard that i can only upgrade my CPU to a AMD 2200+, so pretty much its pointless until i make a new computer, so i would like to get the most out of it for now. Anyone possibly give me some help?

Depends what mobo you have, my p4 mobo supports OC and comes with easytune 4, which is a simple OC method, if you want to OC your ATi, get the Omega Drivers and it comes with an OC tool. try that out :)

Here is a program that runs in windows. It has a slider that lets you overclock everything. http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm

I believe ATItool is the program of choice to overclock ATI graphics cards. I wouldn't bother with yours; it handles HL2 superbly. You're bottlenecking with your CPU and memory. That stuff is overclocked via the BIOS (when you turn your computer on, one of the screens should tell you what key to hit to enter BIOS or Setup; that's where you want to be). Athlons/AthlonXPs are rather hot, and can be clocked to death (unlike a P4, which can only be volted to death), so be careful. Read as many guides as you can find before you start. If you're lucky, your CPU may even be old enough to be unlocked.

Quick note to users of Intel motherboards: you can't overclock them. Excepting the very newest ones (which allow for only a very meager 4-5%), Intel completely removed the necessary controls to overclock from the BIOS, likely because Intel wants to cater to businesses who're more interested in stability than extreme performance.

ati tool is awesome for ocing ati videocards. 9800p stock is 380/340, as long as the card is well ventiletd and no pci carde colse you could probly get up to xt speeds, which are 412/365 but i no not much about ocing 9800 cards
