Hey all...I get so confused with the Intel Northbridges. I want to build a Core 2, which northbridge would be the best? (will use 8800 GTS but never SLi)

chipsets that support core 2 are the 945P/PL/G, 955X, 975X, P/G/Q965, Q963, 946GZ/PL. I hear the 865PE will support core 2 as well, but it only supports the 800FSB, core 2 use a 1066FSB

How the hell is a socket 478 motherboard with a 865PE northbridge going to support a LGA775 processor? Slight physical problem there I think. That and the fact that it's long out of production, so I really doubt anyone's really gonna add anything to it now. Unless you're talking about the mobile Core 2 Duos that are technically 478, but it's a different 478 (and don't use a 1066MHz FSB). And why would you use a mobile chip when the desktop version is so damn good?

Fluff, of the ones you listed, the 975X is the best one. Just to confuse you, you could also look into an nForce 570/590 or (if you can afford it) the brand new 680i.

Hmm... I wanted to go for an nForce, but the 680i is to expensive and I wan ddr2 800
