Just thought I'd share this simple pc prank with the other techies as it's simple and has some potential. :p

We have all seen those clearly fake photoshopped error messages. They are all poorly done. But what about making real ones? Heres how. Great for pranks. Found it on ebaums, decided to share the steps.

Open Notepad, im sure wordpad will work too, but for now use notepad. the basics of the error code will be:
msgbox"message",16,"title"
16 is the error style, you can try 1-70 though most are the same. 16 = ok. 20 = yes/no 21 = retry/cancel. 18 = abort/retry/ignore

in the "message" you can put anything you want text wise, and it will be the primary message. Title is at the top of the bar. For multiple pop-up windows: by adding 2 lines of he message code

msgbox"blahblah",16,"meep" msgbox"hooya",21,"chump" one right below the other in the same vbs file, will cause the second one to open once you hit ok (or any button) on the first one.

Once done, click Save As, name the file "name.vbs" ("prank.vbs", etc) You can then move the file into start menu, programs, startup, to prank people.

Example:
msgbox"ERROR was not fixed. Please remove your Warp Reactor Drive and vent the Warp Plasma.",21,"ERROR Warp Reactor"
Will create this pop-up error at startup: errorpopuptr0ef7.png

Unresponsive desktop trick:

--Take a screenshot of someone's desktop, by hitting print screen, then paste it into mspaint, then save as a bmp. --Place the file into a random folder and set this picture of the desktop as the new background. --If their taskbar auto-hides, make sure its showing when you take the screenshot. --Then right click the desktop, and select arrange icons, then uncheck show desktop icons. --The real icons will vanish, but the picture will still show them. --Resize the task bar so it no longer shows at all; the screenshot will show a fake taskbar.

(try adding a custom error message to give it some flair)

Already fooled around with my daughter's pc and drove her crazy for a little while. :)

Enjoy!

there used to be a way to change the default error messages in Windows if you had visual basic.

I haven't messed with it in a while so I'm not sure if you still can in vista.

Okay, I tried it. This is what I came up with..

msgbox"Now entering a Moron only zone. ",2,"Morons Only" msgbox"We ask that you leave your sanity behind. ",4,"Oops..." msgbox"Error attempting last command. Retry, or Cancel",21,"Yeah..." msgbox"Click 'OK' to continue...",0,"Morons Only"

Copy and past that into a Text File, and then run it as a VBS script. Its kind of fun,...

Hah, very cool. (except you found it on ebaums) What I want to know is how to make the messagebox say different things if you click yes or no...

I made something like that last year, I replaced the iTunes shortcut for my sisters computer with a shortcut to a program, which started, displaying something that looked like iTunes when it opened, except if you clicked anywhere an error message would show up, going through errors, then going to a blue screen of death for exactly two minutes :) I made it in a game maker program, it was humorous.

A very, very worthy thread. It will be exercised on some friends in the future.

A little behind the times, though.

We used to do this in high school. Go into the labs before school and set up all the computers with the fake desktops...
