Got a 650W power supply running 2 internal HD's and 2 internal DVD Writers , A TV card Gforce 9400 GT gfx card , A 1.60 1.60 duel core possessor, 2GB of ram , 2 External HD's , me Modem and a VCR Connected 2 the TV card.
Don think i missed any thing haha. The problem is last night the fan on my power supply was giving out a A fair amount of heat. The air coming from the the lower fan was doing a little better but wasant asactly cold. Just wondering what u guys think. I was also burning a disk off , Reformatting a movie and encoding somit ellse 2 dvd. So me comp was kinda buisy.
just wondering if u guys think i may need a new powersupply. The power supply in it must b about 8 - 12 months old now.
Without actual temperature readings, that means nothing. "A fair amount of heat" can mean 40C/90F. On my hand, that would feel pretty warm, but it really isn't shit in a computer. Get some temperatures from your motherboard sensors and post them here.
Also, that hardware isn't really power-intensive. 650W is somewhat overkill for those specs. The hardware in my sig is almost twice as powerful, and I'm getting by just fine on 550W.
Even if you are having overheating issues, it's probably not your power supply. When power supplies go bad, it usually leads to random shutdowns, lockups, and the like. If it turns out you really are overheating, it might just be a result of poor insufficient cooling.
I say nothings wrong. Thats what the fans are for, to blow the hot air out of your case rather than it staying inside and overheating your other hardware. The air coming out of the PSU fan generally should be warm.
With your hardware i don't see overheating even being a issue, unless you've got a half inch of dust built up in there.
Good point. Open your case up and use a can of air to blow out any dust buildup on your components. Ideally you should do that every few months.
lol u guys must b reading my mind. Im gunna give that try when me local computer store opens and get a can and clean it out, Haven't cleaned it ina long while prob in desprate need of it. If the prob persists iall check me heat stats from the mother bord from the bios and post it up. If it does work iall prob b aplogising 4 wasting ya time lol
thx guys aprechiate the help
All power supplies put out shitloads of heat, its normal, if yours doesn't then its not normal and I'd be more concerned about that fact lol.
To the touch, I suppose 40C to 50C air could be expected on a heavy load, after a few hours of said heavy load. From boot, I'd say around Room temperature to 35C (or idle)
Just put my hands by the fans and its cool air coming out of both fans now. I did how ever turn everything off last night (power supply induced). SO i dunno , still going 2 clean it out though ... thx 4 the help guys
Cleaned it out and seems 2 b working just fine and got cool air coming from it. Thx again guys
Glad to hear it worked. From now on you might want to do that every other month or thereabouts.
Yeah dust buildup can make a huge difference.
I still need to clean my rig out, when i had it opened to organize some cables my heatsink was packed full of dust. My case has filters on the intake fans so i usually don't need to clean it as often as my other computers.
