hey guys i just got all my new pc parts in today and i decided to take a shot at building it myself instead of waisting money to have someone else do it. My problems are that my pc is not recognizing one of my cd drives and it wont boot windows...some things that you know is that i took 2 cd rom drives out of my original computer and i also took my hard drive out of it. I didnt format the hard drive i just threw it in there...which i think is my problem... but that also comes with another problem cuz my last computer was a dell and they only gave me a recover cd which doesnt work for other comps besides dells....also one of the drives works but the other one doesnt but i think that is because i need to try and use a different power connector...maybe the one im using is shot? ne ways if someone could help me out i would appreciate it...also everything else seems to be working perfectly

Well, if Windows dosen't work, safe mode won't work either.

As for Windows itself, you need to buy another copy. When you purchase/build a new computer, you should always replace the OS. If you're going to reuse the HD, you should always reformat it first. There's little point in getting a new computer if you're not going to use a fresh install of Windows. It will just run slow as hell.

So, in your second post, as far as I can tell, you've solved your problem. The CDROM drive works, and Windows boots. So why are you still implying that there's a problem.

No, you need to repurchase Windows. Unless you can get your Dell recovery CD to work in your new computer.

But most "recovery CD's" aren't really full versions of Windows.

But here's a little (legal) tip.

If you can get your hands on a Windows CD, you can use your Windows serial number (it's generally printed on the Windows sticker on your case) three or so times, before Micorsoft invaladates that serial number. It's a neat trick.
