Im having some problems with mandrake linux (newbie to linux, only been using it day and a half)

I have my CD Drives and floppy drive mounted and supermount on, but the floppy and CD/DVD drives i just can not accsess at all. when i go to /mnt/whatever/ it just shows an empty folder and no attempt to accsess the disk in the drive. (sence?) anyone got any clues how to accsess a disk in Mandrake? :p *

Also i have a seccond partition but i can only accsess it when logged on as root, i've played with my normal user account and it just has accsess denied or shows nothing....

any help would be nice. and forgive me if this is a n00b question but like i say, linux n00b :p

Thanks

*edit: cant accsess CD's either but it does play DVD movies in Totem
