Sometimes, my PC would randomly freeze. When I press Alt-Ctrl-Del the program "SMC" is always the one that is not responding. Even if my PC wasnt frozen, and I press Alt-Ctrl-Del, it would be "not responding." And if I end task, sometimes it would freeze on my and i would have to do a Hard shut down. I dont even know what "SMC" is. If anyone knows what program it is, and how to fix it. Please help.

After having a look around this seems to be connected to a Sygate Personal Firewall. A number of people have this problem but apparently the Firewall is still working. The Sygate site is here, you may be able to find some help there. They have a forum, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link directly to it...

Unless you mean the rules of the other forum, you can link to the forum for help purposes here. Not as if anyone would leave this wonderful forum to join their shitty one, eh?

I don't know if you have bought this firewall or not but if you havn't (or have and don't care about the money you've spent on it), then just uninstal it and use either the Service Pack 2 firewall (if you have XP) or some free one like Zonealarm - they all work the same and block the same ports. No need to spend money unless you're a feature junkie.

OK, thanks. i am checking the site/forums now.

I am using Sygate personal firewall (free version). in case you were wondering.

EDIT: I found the problem! Here is what it says:

This is a known issue in 5.6 running 98 or ME you can download 5.5 build 2710 from here which dose not have this problem. The next new build of 5.6 has shown this to be fixed and will be released when it is ready.

Will this problem cause faulty performance if I should just keep this version until the next one comes out. I am using dial connection, but I wonder if it really is causing that much performance problems, it doesnt seem to be slowing anything?

For some users it may not cause any problems, but this issue could cause system stability problems that are unknown.

Thats what i found in their support forums, didnt need to register or anything (thankfully). So it is just a problem with 98/ME. It recommends to install an older version and then when a new build comes out, the problem would be fixed. I would try Zone Alarm, but i am used to Sygate right now. so yeah.

Thanks for the help guys.

rahmanI have both Zone alarm as well as McAfee Personal Firewall.

Question, do you know there are known issues with running 2 firewalls. If your using Windows XP SP2, your running 3 firewalls. I'm amazed you can even get online. Allowing a program to access the web must be a nightmare.

What anti-virus are you running rahman? (A quiz to test your knowledge)
