I've been putting together a new PC, and I had just completed everything (double check cables) and went to turn it on.

The led in the PSU flashed. Then nothing.

So I tried it again, and it sent sparks out and a lot of smoke.

Obviously I switched of the power pretty quickly.

Is it just defective, or is there some other problem?

Sounds like its just a defective PSU to me. I haven't seen one quite that bad yet but I've seen them smoke and give off awful odors.

At this point, following sparks and smoke? I'd wager that if it wasn't defective before, it is now. Testing it would probably either confirm the above, or blow your hand off...

Any obvious damage to other components?

Not that I could see, except that the plug to the DVD drive was extremely difficult to remove, but it doesn't have seemed to have fused or melted.

It's just dead now. And its going back to the store tomorrow.
