I am pretty sure to get a 64bit p4 it will only go up to 3.6GHz.... of course if you get one of those then you can always overclock it to 3.8GHz. So your answer is no for a off-the-shelf 3.8GHz P4

The best P4 was the 3.73GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition on the LGA775 socket (model number 965). However, they cost so much (even now) that you could buy a new motherboard and a more powerful Core 2 Duo processor; and still have money left over. There was no point in it at the time, and there's even less point now.

However, the fastest clock speed was the 670, which was clocked at 3.8GHz. Again, it was overpriced and there's really no point.

965 is 65nm, 670 is 90nm

Ok, looks like 3.8GHz was available :-) But Arch is definately right... core 2 duo would be much better.

Was there even a 64-bit version of the Pentium 4?

The entire Pentium 4 6xx lineup is 64-bit.

Well, im already getting a core 2 duo system... for my next build, the reason i want a top of the range P4, is for a gaming server i plan to host 24/7... because my dual P3, cant keep up with top of the line games to run as servers lol... :smokin: so hence a 3.6 to 3.8 Ghz system will do nice. As for the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition... there was another Pentium Cpu, called "Intel Pentium Extreme Edition" and it was not a P4 right? two diff cpu's?

They stopped calling it Pentium 4 when they changed the branding around, but it's as much a Pentium 4 as...any other Pentium 4. There's so many different types that you just have to dump them into one big box under the P4 name.

I maintain that it's pointless. You don't need a processor like that to run a gaming server, and even if you did the Core 2 Duo option is still better.

Marv, most of the later models have EMT64 just like the Pentium D, C2D etc do.
