Hi lads,

So the family have chucked their old computer, and I get it to experiment with, so I'm thinking Ubuntu-based server. The motherboard's fried though, so I need to know what I'm looking for.

Not being familiar with AMD CPUs, I don't know what'll work. The processor is an Athlon 64 X2 4600. AM2 socket. I think that's compatible with AM2+ boards, not 100% though. Also AM3? (Odds are won't be getting one of those as this will be cheap-as-possible build)

Any boards to pay particular attention to with AMD? The one that it did have was an nForce 530i chipset, dunno what AMD's chipset is. (X48, etc. equivalent)

Thanks.

AMD2+, yes, AM3, no (although there are boards that support both) Honestly, AM2 and even AM2+ boards are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially good boards with 4xDIMMs and good onboard chips.

I believe the approximate equivalent of an nForce 530 is a 740G... nForce 530 is a fairly old chipset, any newer AMD chipset should far outperform it. I couldn't find any exact matches, but put it this way... an nForce 630 has a GeForce 7025 and an nForce 430 has a 6150, so a 530 falls somewhere between not good and terrible. Most of the newer AM2+ boards you'll find will probably have a 785G.

I should mention I have a 9500GT lying around that I'm going to throw in it first, so no worries there. I'll hopefully be running this headless, so I don't necessarily even need a GPU (assuming the motherboard I get will be happy to boot without one)

Gigabyte boards in my experience are the best for AMD. Had a few MSI and variuos other brands that have never been quit as good as Gigabyte. AMD motherboards: buy cheap and reliable components.. | Ebuyer.com There are 4 on that page and all have onboard graphics so will boot headless after os install. They only have 2 ram slots though but all support 8gb ram. Not sure if Ebuyer ship to Ireland but don't see why not. This one is not bad either Asrock N68C-S UCC AM2+ Micro-ATX Motherboard: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories It has 4 ram slots and a IDE slot so some older hardware can be used.

I had seen that second board alright, probably the one I'll go for. Ebuyer used to ship here, not any more. Can't remember why.
