To be honest I've not heard of soundcard codecs yet. Depends on the software you use I guess. If you use software that doesn't supply it's own codecs, then yes, others like VLC, Foobar2k and a couple of others come with their own.

Install the drivers for the card but keep the codec pack. Might be a good idea to uninstall/reinstall the codec pack after you've installed the new card drivers just in case.

I always recommend installing codecs piecemeal. That way you know you only have ones you need and what ones you've installed in case problems arise and you need to disable/uninstall some.

Typically sound cards do not use codecs. Those that are hardware driven like Creatives decode via firmware in their chips. Those that are software driven do some of the work via hardware, but surround via software included in the drivers.

Furthermore, you're much more likely to get codec conflicts with software apps such as media players that use various ones than you are a sound card.

thx for ifno. i have uninstalled the k lite codec pack and all seems to work liek they did excepot games crashing snice i installed sound card :( winamp and other programs still work as they use too. in my dirver info it has codecs listed as 'audio codec: CM18770' so i assume it has its own ?

another problem i am having that is game related and my understanding is no game related issues here so i wont say anything. i read to disable the mic,so i did but it completley removed it from sound options in control panel, in the recording section. its now using the line in. is it possible i can get the 'microphone' device back again ?

thanks
