I have an Acer laptop, and when I started up, nothing shows up on the screen. I tried hooking up a monitor to it via VGA, still nothing. Is this something I should just bring to Best Buy or can I fix this myself?
Ahhhhh! I had a very similar problem with an Acer laptop. Cheap SOB's they are.
So, tell me, is the hard drive light turning on when you press the power button? Or when you press the power button, does nothing happen?
Might need to play with your BIOS a bit if you have the same problem I had...I ended up buying a brand new $275 motherboard because that was what fried...lets hope you don't have to pay the same. Please explain more! :)
You're probably hosed. It's not uncommon for screens to fail on older laptops, thanks to wear on the cable that occurs from the constant flexing of opening and closing the lid. But if you're not getting any signal out of the body of the laptop, then you've probably lost something rather more important. If you're getting HDD activity on power on, then I'd speculate that the motherboard and drive itself are OK. RAM is a possible culprit, as is the video chip. RAM can be replaced, VPU not so much.
I'd check the hard drive against another machine if possible, and try swapping RAM. Honestly though, I don't think either will solve your problem: in either case you can usually get at least some kind of response from the display.
I'd take it as a good excuse to get a new computer, like this fancy ass MBP that I'm writing on just now!
take the back off your laptop, and take a looksie.
