Okay guys, I am a lightning fast typer and since I just RMA'ed my video card in my main rig I am now stuck on this laptop for a week or two. In this short time I have already noticed a problem I don't normally notice since I don't use this laptop so much. When I start typing, sometimes it doesn't register keystrokes. It's like I'll be typing and hit a letter or the space then it doesn't do it but keeps going with everything else I do. Ironically I'm typing right now in this box and it isn't doing it but it was doing it pretty bad on Gmail and on Facebook. My question - what is causing this hangup of the keys? It's really annoying since I'm a fast typer. My laptop is an HP Pavillion dv6628us with Vista Home Premium if the specs of it matter any. I am of course using the laptop's keyboard and have not tried an external keyboard (And as such I don't want to since I normally intend to type on the keyboard on this laptop and need to just fix whatever is causing this problem). Again, it doesn't seem to be consistent since I typed this whole message without any lag or catchups in the typing but Gmail is especially bad about it. Any suggestions?

From what I've read this is a common problem with HP DV series notebooks. One person even exchanged it for another and got one that had the problem even worse. Some say it happens within 10 min or so after turning it on, or that rebooting can fix it. Since it happens erratically it's hard to pinpoint whether the KBs themselves are faulty, their connection points are not contacting properly, or there's some software related issue. Have you checked the manual or HP's site for any troubleshooting on this? I don't hear of this problem on their latest models, so apparently they've somehow corrected it.

I doubt this would be in any manual - perhaps on their support site but it's odd how sometimes it does it and others it doesn't. I mean just now it didn't work on a couple of keys but for most of this message it is working fine. So far I count 5 times in everything before this that didn't type on the first go and since I typed "5 times" it has done it five more times. This really sucks...

You might try disabling any KB related OS functions you don't need or use, like sticky keys, just to see if it helps. Short of that I think this may just be bad KBs they used on the DV models.

Well, I've used my laptop some more and it's weird. Now it's mostly just Gmail that lags. But even now, I haven't really been having the problem as much. I contacted HP support and they recommended flashing my BIOS to the newest version (which I did). Didn't fix the issue at the time but it seems to be occuring less. I have been doing most of my typing with no problems. It seems like Gmail lags a lot, and it kinds lags on here if I open the new page to type a response - but as a general it doesn't do it as much. Really strange...Hasn't done it at all in this message and I have typed it as quick as always. Ah well, who knows why it is sporadic like that...
