ok, so while this is no longer really an issue, its been bugging me since christmas, and i thought you guys might find it interesting so i got an ipod touch for christmas, and despite my hate of apple, i actually love the thing, i can surf the net, check my emails, play games, listen to music, and its easy and nice to use anyway, my problem started when i wanted to download some apps from the app store, i noticed i didnt have the app store on my ipod touch. so after about 30 seconds on google i found out that i needed to update my firmware to at least 2.0 so i started the process and realized apple wanted to charge me TEN BUCKS for the update. now yes this is a small amount but lets take a step back and think about what an update is. pretty much an update is a company saying "we found some flaws in our code, here are the fixes" now while this particular update included a new feature it still was essentially to fix problems (also with windows updates you didnt see microsoft charging for the new internet explorer did you?) apple is one of the only companies to actually charge for updates and the made me really mad. However i swollowed my pride, and because i wanted forked over the $10. Apple took my money, and started the connection, i got through the opening stuff, and the end user license agreement (which made me think the server was up) but when the download was supposed to start it kept saying there was something wrong with my internet connection. now again, i got through the end user license agreement, and it took my money and could download stuff through itunes store so i was like (the server is up) so the first thing i did was disable my firewall and antivirus, no luck. then i tried looking up any ports that itunes uses and forwarded them to my computer, still no luck. I then forwarded ALL the ports to my computer, again same problem. Then reset the settings in my router and tried my mothers computer, still didnt work. i then went back to my computer thinking "maybe its a problem with vista" and ran my xp virtual machine and still had no luck so now im a little pissed because my research into the issue has yeilded no results thus far. However something my research did lead me to was the fact that there were NINE MAJOR SECURITY UPDATES between the firmware i had and the firmware i was trying to upgrade to, and apple was trying to charge me for this?! (or im sorry, DID charge me for) finally after a few hours i stumbled upon a few other people having the same problem on the apple support site, now while this eased my frustration a little bit, now knowing that it wasnt my computer, it angered me more that no one at apple put a restriction on the firmware download so when you paid for it nothing poped up like "server down due to excessive load, try again later" or SOMETHING, no they took my money and then left me up to my own search for hours to finally find out it was there fault. So i posted my frustrations in the apple thread, not expecting any answers that night (considering it was about 10:30pm christmas night) but because i thought people should have a right to know that they are being charged to have problems that apple created fixed. Not to mention i said its not like apple was blind sided, im sure they had projected sales for the christmas season, and that a large amount of them would want the updates, and should have prepared the servers accordingly but no, they took my money and denied me the download for about 4 days now all that i can live with, they're not perfect, and all that garbage, i would have been mad but it would not have bugged me as much as it has if this hadent happened remeber how i said that i posted this is the apple thread? it was no more "impolite" than the thread im currently writing, and it just listed the facts like im doing such as

  • apple is one of the ONLY companies that charges for updates
  • they were charging to fix CRITICAL UPDATES
  • their lack of caring as they did not update the server that controlled purchases, not to mention people on the thread got nothing confirmed that the server was down until they finally got a hold of a SUPERVISOR the next morning after being transfered to 4 people, dont you think apple should have been like "we're sorry the servers down and will be back up as soon as possible"? not like "duh... wats a server?"

so what did apple do with an unsatisfied customer? THEY DELTED MY POST, my only guess is because they didnt want the other customers to see all the facts i listed now if i wanted to really get into it, i could argue about how that violates my constitutional right to the freedom of speech and all that crap, but i dont really care, the thing that royally pisses me off is that apple gets away with this garbage, and makes the smallest possible attempt to actually help ANYONE

Its a corporation. What do you expect? Apple isn't this great company that all these people make them out to be. They're just as bad as everyone else.

oh no, im not saying i didnt expect this from apple what threw me was actually the deletion of my post i didnt want anything from them, well other than for them to fix the server i was just distributing information because i think people should be able to stay informormed about the companies screw ups i honestly expected them to ignore it, but they actually did something wierder and more "jerkish" (best pg word i could think of that would describe it) than that, they deleted it, keeping it from anyone else, which isnt a lack of response wich is typical of any large organization, it was a response, a response of a slap in the face

Sounds like any other corportation. For example when someone cracked creative drivers and people brought it up the admins in the creative forum deleted all the posts people would bring up about the topic and threatened to sue the guy who made the drivers.

Apple do provide updates to fix critical issues for free since they are required to do so. You just need to tell iTunes that you didn't want to buy 2.0 at all.

As for their behaviour, it is bad, but almost any other company would have done the same.

Might explain why microsoft is allowing first series zune owners to upgrade to the newest version of the firmware for free.

Gives them an edge I guess.
