hello, was wondering if u got a 7.1 sound card that u could hook up 5.1 system to it and itd work aight ? got 5.1 today and alot of the sound cards i see are 7.1, could i hook up my 5.1 system to a 7.1?

Yes, put simply. The number (5 and 7) refers to the amount of channels, or in this case speakers, it supports. So if your card can take 7, obviously it can take 5.

It'll work just fine. The 7.1 refers to the maximum number of channels it can support, not the only number.

Just make sure you plug into the right jacks on your sound card. On a 7.1 there should be an extra one for side speakers, which you won't need to use. They often aren't labeled that way though, as some jacks are "universal". So make sure you read the sound card's manual and control GUI. One or both of them should tell you the right 5.1 configuration for connecting the speakers and setting the software up.
