I'm having a problem with the sound on my games such as dawn of war, the units will start to say something when you select them but will then be interrupted by a sort of random 'squiggly' noise and then sometimes the sound goes off completely or I get interferance. Anyway to get to the point is this because of my sound card? its the one that came with my pc (realtek AC97) and so is probably a bit crap and thought I may upgrade it but i dont understand them at all so could someone recommend me a nice, cheap PCI graphics card, I dont really want to be spending above £40 which is about $80 i think? thanks. Sorry if that doesnt make sense but im in a hurry.

Try the updating or even down-grading of drivers. Also enter the game and try messing about with the sound settings, it might be an idea to lower the quality. Remeber that the on-board sound will steal some CPU processing power to make the sounds, so if ur PU is lacking that could explain it - it can't keep up.

Are you after a sound-card or a graphics card, you seemed to have mixed them up in your post? You can get hold of an Audigy2 OEM card for about £20 - that gives you 7.1 sound or a Soundblaster 5.1 for about £10.

I'm not sure about what's causing the issues aside from a possible driver problem.

If you want a new sound card, you can get a Soundblaster Live! really cheap (£20-25), an Audigy for a bit more (£25-35), and you might be able to get an Audigy2 ZS for about £50. I'm not sure who the best online suppler would be in the UK though.

I just got a Soundblaster X-FI Platinum and I love it and highly recommend it. It's a bit more than you're looking to spend though. Even the base model, the Xtreme Music edition, is probably ~£75+.

Although that card design is very old, it's still superior to anything made by Realtek. Could also try something like the one below, but it's not in stock and I can't be bothered to look it up elsewhere for you. :p

I think i'll go with the Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE 7.1 OEM for £20, but before that ill try tinkering with the settings a bit more, I already messed around with the drivers and hardware accleration tool but ill look for what else i can muck around with, thanks for your help.
