I've been wondering how much sound cards really upgrade sound quality when compared to onboard sound, Is the upgrade really worth it? What effect can this have on gaming performance if I have an AMD64 4000+? I have been thinking about buying an Audigy 4 SE (that one : http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=17936&vpn=30SB061000000&manufacture=Creative%20Labs ), and I don't really know if it would be an upgrade over my soon-to-be-received A8N-SLI Deluxe's onboard sound. I have 2 good speakers and a 100watt subwoofer, if it can give any idea of what an impact it would have. Should I go for it?

The main function of a sound card is to take the job off of the processor for processing the sound efffects in a game. And since the prossesor no longer has to worry about computing the sound, it gives the processor an artificial boost in speed.

But to fully exploit the potential of that sound card, you'd want to get yourself a set of 5.1 speakers.

It is definately worth it overall, but in terms of actual performance gains you won't see much difference. Like Marv said you will need decent speakers, but apparently you have them so that's no big deal. But unlike what Marv said, you don't need 5.1 to take advantage of a better sound card.

There's certainly no point running decent speakers from onboard sound. it defies the point of buying decent speakers. You may as well buy the cheapest 2.0 set on the market that will probably cost £10 and have a combined output of like 10W.

Good to hear! 45$US pretty much = 54$CAD, so I'm not getting ripped off. I suppose I shall buy it.
