My computer has heaps of problems. Crashes, random folders with names like 13438kdjfh019324kldja92, I could go on for a long time believe me. I might be able to fix them all but I cant really be bothered. I'd rather just wipe everything and reinstall windows. How? Is this possible? Would it help?

Well yeah, of course

[QUOTE=snabbler;3552274] Would it help?

I guess it would, yet it is quite an extreme solution.

Another thing. I want to back up pictures and music on one of them external harddrives. Is it possible for any viruses that I have to be tacked to a media file?

Hmm I doubt it, except that there may be macro viruses in word documents. And all sorts of corrupted files designed to crash a multimedia player, yet that has to be very rare, and even if it crashes your player, you would be very unlucky if it "executes random code allowing someone to take control over your machine" as they say ...

Can you just burn them on some DVDs?

When you reformat and you think you might of had a virus, install a good antivirus such as Avast! before you start copying your old files back over. Also, i would scan the files before you copy them over to your hard drive.

Couldn't he just install an antivirus before he connects the external drive? It would have the same effect with less effort...

Yes, he could. I would still scan the files though, i had couple of files before that went undetected until i manually scanned them so its a good idea.

I mentioned using DVDs because by his posts i wasn't sure if he already had the external drive or not....
