The moment you have an option to upgrade the stock ones, do so at once. To almost whatever :P If apple does at least something wrong with the way it makes hardware - it's the earphones.

Most people will tell you, that they are awful.

Agreeing with Junk Angel here. The stock Apple earphones are just awful. ...though IMO their iTunes software is worse (Winamp is amazing for that though).

The most important thing about those earphones is not so much the sound quality (as you have an EQ, I think, with the iPod), and anything you buy will be from a good brand at least, but it's how they fit the shape of your ear. That determines how much bass you'll get, what it's like, and generally how sharp and clear everything will be.

I found a pair of stereo headphones at Radioshack with amazing quality for only $25.

Here's a pair I found on newegg for good price, and it got great reviews: Newegg.com - SENNHEISER HD457 3.5mm Connector Circumaural stereo headphones

Tell you what. Get rid of the iPod, and buy yourself a non-apple product. That's my advice...

foobar2000 > Winamp

I have no idea if foobar has any kind of ipod plugin, though i wouldn't be suprised if it did. I use iTunes for importing all my music (ALAC), and foobar for playing it.

^ foo_dop :) And to be honest, while circumaurals are nice, normal cans as well, I'd not get either if I'd want to be portable. But agreed on sennheiser stuff. Even getting their cheapest or midrange plugs will be a vast upgrade.
