So, I've decided to set up a small surveillance system (which those being observed know about) to figure out who's being obnoxiously loud at night. I will be using a Logitech camera with HD video and a mic built in.

What I would like to do is have it set to record a small video when there is motion nearby, record the audio during this time, and show the date and time of the video.

What software would you suggest to most successfully pull this off and how do you use it for this purpose? Preferably I'd like the software to be open source.

Thanks!

Have a look at any software that came with your web cam. My old cams software could do that from years ago. That said it is more likely now that cams don't come with software but are just PnP

It has motion capture, nothing else really kinda weaksauce. That and it'd be simpler to download something different than to stuff the software onto a USB stick. The computer I'd be using is my netbook without an optical drive simply because it's easier to move that to where it needs to be than my 40+ lbs rig. :P I wouldn'tve asked if I wasn't sleep deprived by this, and hadn't already looked at my current option :P

OK got it set up, the camera is a Logitech C910, the software is ridiculously awesome. I was literally so tired that I didn't notice the MOTION DETECTION option on the main menu /facepalm. Anywho, it's set up on a low motion detection threshold, records video and audio with a max duration of a minute, the angle is perfect, the camera activity light is also turned off while in this function. I feel like some sort of spy XD

Thanks for at least giving me suggestions, sorry I posted a thread from being sleepy!
