Hey all...I am trieing to prove a point to my math teacher. He sits there and tries to tell me to buy a TI-83/4/6 calculator for only $150! WOW, $150! Honestly, are those things even worth $30? Does anyone know the specs on these piles of overpriced crap? I think the ram is half a megabyte. Thx all.

I paid £7 (US$12) for a scientific calculator for school, and it can do way more than anything I'll ever need to do in Maths.

I paid only $80 for mine, you're getting jipped. Maybe if you go to the pawn shop you can buy a crappy TI-83 for $20-$30.

I don't know what you're complaining about either, most people at my school have one of those calculators. Some even pay $150 for the better TIs. The better ones have a lot more ram, wireless connection, etc.

You can probably find the technical specs on the TI website: http://education.ti.com/educationportal/

And you can download dozens of games for the TI, like: Doom, Zelda, Asteroids, Worm, Pheonix.. and many more.

Yeah, but we need graphing calculators for school, not just scientific.

I got my TI-83 5 years ago for about the same price I think. (In fact, it's on my desk, next to my keyboard.)

You can do a lot of stuff with it, even write your own programs. Comes with a 200 page manual too. :)

...It...is...just...a...calculator... That's way overpriced for a graphing calculator. I don't think you should have to do work that can't by done by hand. What if your calculator breaks?

Why would it matter if it did only have a half meg of ram? It's a calculator, not a gaming computer. It does math, and it does most of it a hell of a lot faster than you could do it without a calculator, so however much ram it has is more than enough.

As for it being a pile of crap? Mine has currently withstood 5 years of riding around in my backpack, taking a ton of abuse being bashed and thrown around. Two years of high school and 3 years of college, and it still works just fine.

You can buy a new Ti-83 Plus for about $100. If the place you are looking is charging $150 for them, you are getting ripped hardcore.
