Tech Report put together a gaming system, par the monitor, for only a mere $538!

The sad part is the system is better than my own! Here are the specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ [COLOR=Black]Asus M2M4 SLI mobo 2 GB Corsair ValueSelect memory eVGA Geforce 8600 GT Western Digital Cavalier 320 GB hard drive Samsung DVD burner w/ lightscribe Nvida nForce 500 integrated audio Antect NSK 4400 w/ 380 watt PSU

Where was this when I bought a computer three years ago? :bawl:

Hmm ... heard that the 8600's are quite bad compared with 8800, and not so much worth their prices. Also, can do better than 3600+ ... well of course, you get what you pay for, it's a cheap one, you don't get great stuff ^^

For someone who has only $500, getting any kind of video card is a good deal IMHO.

I agree, for a budget, the spec is ok IMHO, dual core with 2 gig and a 8600 would run most things well. Ok not exactly cutting edge but still fairly modern.

Apart from the DVD-reader and PSU, I'd say it probably wasn't invented when you bought a computer three years ago. :p

As someone who just upgraded their spec significantly, I'd say that even most of those components are overkill. There is no way you need an 8600 for gaming - I just obtained a 7600GT care of a good friend and I have to say that I haven't hit a hurdle yet, nor was I hitting many with an ATI Radeon 9550. I'd actually have spent the money I would save on a cheaper video card on a faster CPU, not that I wouldn't jump at a 3600+

I also agree that the 8800 is better than the 8600's but the price is also a bit steeper.

Were talking difference between $165 for a 8600GTS and $279 for a 8800GTS

Yes the 8800GTS is better but if its beyond your budget then a 8600GTS isnt a bad choice.

Personally Im trying to wait til the imminent arrival of the AMD 2600XT which is set to arrive for $150 and performs between the 8600GT and the 8600GTS.

If you ask me thats a damn good computer for $500. Thats far better than my current gaming PC, and would be capable of running just about everything decently.

Just goes to prove that you don't have to spend big bucks to get a good PC. Most of the top of the line parts like the 8800 Ultra are mainly for bragging rights in my opinion.
