I don't really IM all that much but when I used to go on Google Talk I remembered it being very clean and simple, like IM programs should be. Not a hassle of smilies, advertisement, and setup issues. Just a Google account and simple chatting with audio and video support.

I use Messenger, although heavily patched to remove adverts and add nifty little features, like drawing the currently playing song from winamp rather than the media player.

www.mess.be www.msgplus.net

Two of the best modification sites for Messenger. I only use the mess patch from mess.be though.

ICQ for some friends who prefer it over messenger.

MSN has to be the best IM program hands down. its packed with loads of features to keep you entertained, like custom emotions nudging webcam support picture displays and loads more. sadly MSN on the mac dosent have these features, thats why I use Adium which allows you to use MSN,AIM,ICQ,YIM,Google talk,Jabber pretty much all the IM services available and you don't even have to install them just make a new adium account.

ICQ has to be the worst EVER IM I have ever used its terrible I alaways get complete strangers adding me, this is why I prefer YIM,AIM and MSN you get to speak to people you actually know, has anybody else got added by total strangers on ICQ ? ICQ's layout is terrible but this is why adium comes in handy where you can choose loads of different skins I use a MGS codec style to talk to people heres s a screengrab

Adium is a exclusive Mac IM client but basically its the OSX version of GAIM but Adium has loads of add ons.

In that screen of Adium is a AIM chat with Agentlaidlaw. ;)

ICQ is actually the single best messenger I've ever used. I hate the persistent dialogue window that plagues most every other client I've reason to use, and happen to be intelligent enough to know how to set mode to invisible, as well as force a request to add.

If ICQ sucked as much as some seem to believe, it wouldn't be going on a decade old.

I know your not asking what we think is the best, but your listing what you think are the best, which is bullshit really as the best should be the one that you and your mates use :)

Yeah but that person would generally use the same one that all their mates used, thats my point.

Am I blind or is there no Miranda IM on that list?

It is the best instant messenging program currently out there hands down, GAIM is good too, but it's both uglier and cumbersome to use, and Trillian used to be the best in my opinion, but the latest versions are so covered in problems I just can't use it anymore.

My favourite protocoll is ICQ, but the program isn't too good, and msn comes as a second only because almost everyone I talk with uses it. Otherwise it locks me out every now and then, it has always done that even with Trillian, so I can't blame the program, and it basically hasn't enough useful features. Miranda IM luckily shows smilies as text, so I can spam a lot without hurting my eyes, and no (or too high for me to notice) limit on message length is practical. Not getting stupid nudges and e.g. frogs that jump around on a screen is a huge plus too. :)

The MSN Messenger program is really bad, it lacks in security it seems, it looks awful, and it features all those terrible things that make a normal conversation horrible with someone who likes spam, ending up in a spam war with endless pigs and stuff instead of nice pure text.

Not really. Trillian, Msnm, Gaim and other support your msn address.. so it depends which one you like more because either way you can still keep in contact with somone using trillain if you are using Gaim.
