I had my 6600gt for about 6-7 months....It only stopped working a few weeks ago and I'm still not sure why. I just decided on getting a new gpu. I created a thread for suggestions on what to get before I got it, cause many of the people here were so helpful :p , so I'm asking again: what gpu should I get? My specs are: Dell Dimension 8200 Intel P4 1.80 Ghz 512 ram Agp 4x If I didn't list enough, tell me what else I'm missin and I can start up CpuZ. A few people here said that I should be prepared for the 6600gt to not work properly since my pc is abit old and it's only agp 4x. It ended up working perfectly fine it seemed, for about 7 months of course. I don't really play any games that are exremely demanding for performance (that might have to wait till I get an entire new pc) but I would at least like a decent framerate. I'm willing to spend about $150 and I've always been an Nvidia user. If my pc is doomed to get another 6600gt, I wouldn't mind too much since it worked out pretty well for me, but somethin better than it would be nice. What would be a good card for my pc? I play Guild Wars alot, but also play HL2/CSS sometimes and occasioanlly FEAR or Call of Duty 2. I don't mind not bein able to run my games on max detail......I thought FEAR looked very nicely on medium settings, and I also had pretty good performance with it on my 6600gt. I'll be ordering from Newegg....any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, especially since I'm not very good when it comes to pc hardware.....Thanks!
The 7600GS would do the trick well. Here's the link:
It is AGP 4x compliaint too.
And might I recomend that you upgrade your ram to atleast one gig?
with those kinda specs, i wouldnt really be spending $$ on a video card just yet as your agp slot only goes up to 4x. I would save up alittle more and invest on at least a 2 or 2.2ghz p4 and another 512 of ram and a mobo with an agp 8x slot. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html this is the link to a program called everest, it gives the complete information about your computer and its specs. if you want a decent framerate, i would recommend working on the important parts first cause with just a better video card, it would only bottleneck the ram and cpu.
If hes going to get a new mobo, cpu and ram there really isent anypoint in buying a socket 478 and AGP. You whould rather have a AMD ore Intel socket that supports PCIe.
I didn't make it!
First, I would upgrade that crappy processor. It's not that P4s are out-o-date, its just that 1.8 WILL NOT cut it for nextgen games. As for GPUs, I got a 6800 gs (512mb, 256 bit) for 180$, its probably gone down to 150. I can play BF2 maxed smooth as a yung-'un's bottom, as well as Quake 4, FEAR, and GRAW. Its a little old and no DX10, but it does the fucking trick. ;D

to be perfectally honest... you'd be better off with a whole new computer... Dells are not very upgradeable, as the CPU goes, someone correct me on that if i am wrong.
I understand that my entire pc is pretty much all old and very outdated, but I only want a new temporary gpu simply cause I'm stuck back to using my GeForce3.....most of my games run somewhat horrible, but the 6600gt at least allowed me to run my fav games at a very playable framerate. I really don't mind having to run things on medium (or in BF2's case, everythin pretty much on low) as long as I can get a decent framerate. I'm not upgrading/buying a new pc just cause the costs can be abit high. I'd rather not spend lots of money on upgrades at the moment. It all might add up for enough to just buy a console and not have to deal with upgrades, but I'm not a console person nor am I dedicated enough to spend alot on pc upgrades. If my pc is doomed to just get another 6600gt, I can deal with that.... it's tons better than what I got :p . If I could get somethin that's abit better than a 6600gt though, that'd be nice, but I'll say again...I'm not willing to spend money on other upgrades besides the gpu, just looking for somethin that'd get the job somewhat done for now.
heres a bfg geforce 6800 gs 256mb for only 164.99, but after rebate its 134.99. that should last you a while considering its much better than what you had before.
or here is a 7600 gs 512mb for a cheaper price.
Get the 7600, you'll love it. It is even a decent step up from your old 6600.
Looks like I'll be getting that 7600 soon o_O I'll download that program to make sure my pc can run it without errors....Thanks alot again for all the help! :p I wouldn't know what card to buy without having any problems :uhm:
