Hello people Please help me identify this weird graphic fault. I've attached screenshots from Stalker but this problem happens on many of my games examples would be B&W 2, Battlefield 2, Counterstrike, and so on. there are games that it does not happen on examples would be Fear, Prey, and I think Oblivion was clear as well. To describe the fault, It seems like one line or pixels break off stretching across the visible area, obscuring sometimes the entire field of view. The effect can follow the player and is as you might imagine fantastically annoying! I have the latest graphic drivers, I have a nvidia GeForce 7900 GTX 512mb the system is fine as far as I can tell, it's a fast dual core with 2gb ram I won't bother with all the specs as I really don't think this is a performance issue given the wide range of games it effects. I can't even begin to think what would cause this problem, in my attempts to fix it I've found that the only solution is to leave the game and enter again that seems to sort it but after a random period of time it'll be back again. Amazingly if I load the game without quitting it won't fix it!! I've run a program called CCleaner to make sure there are not excess caches. I have the latest directX I think 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) I'm running XP pro Anything anyone can suggest would be extremely helpful Thanks

Drivers and heat problems tend to cause tearing like that. Make sure your fan isnt full of crap then uninstall the old drivers and install newer (or older) ones and see if that helps.

STALKER is known to have graphics bugs by itself as far as I know, your drivers may very well not be faulty at all.

Heating could be the issue I guess but why then does it never occur in Prey? or doom3? as they surely have to be putting the card through it's pases?

Also on my last vid driver, I could see the GPU heat and it seemed to be holding at 51 degrees or at least it was just after having been in the game.

Is there anything else that could cause this tearing, other than heat??

Thanks

51 degrees? That's dosen't seem bad at all.

Hmmmm.....

I am leaning towards a defective card. How old is it?

I would lean towards a defective card, if he didn't just tell us that it doesn't do it during prey or doom3. I would say you need to reinstall as it could be a textures issue. Also, some games do different things to different cards. The load could be quite different depending on the game.

That's a bummer. You may still be able to RMA (return) it, depending on the brand. I just had to send back my defective, 16 month old EVGA 7900GT 256mb 2 weeks ago. They sent back a 7950GT 512mb. EVGA has a great warranty/service which is why I prefer them over other nvidia vendors.
