My os is WinXP pro and a few days ago my internet browsers FireFox and Explorer started crashing alot.
Next thing I knew when ever I opened anything a folder a game a app I would get a popup giving an error message for either browser saying it crashed. And then whatever app or folder I just opened crashs to. This is now starting to happen almost whenever I open anything. I checked with a few security apps: Norton, spybot, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2. And I doubt its virus/trojen related. Some new weird things that just started today: Shortcut icons are randomly loseing/gaining their picture when I reboot.
Any advise on what to do before I reformate and delete everything?
did you try to delete them and reinstall the explorers? i once has a problem where IE wouldnt even open, i reinstalled it and then it worked ok. try that, and if it doesnt work, reformat it.
I take what n0e says way too seriously

You can't re-install under XP. It's "Integrated".
that sucks, i was lucky my problem was on my win 98 computer!
sometimes i think microsoft doesnt have a clue in the world as to what there doing, why would you integrate another program, have in there but allow you to delete it for gods sake!
Can you check and make sure all your systems fams are working and make sure your CPU fam is working and not clogged.
Also find a freeware memory tester and test your memory. My system was getting really screwy and come to find out I had a bad RAM stick.
Also if your system is overheating it will get screwy too.
Run norton systemworks WinDoctor and a Defrag and Scandisk and make sure all those apps are up to date.
Turns out I was missing a service pack. I thought I had it since their was no problems in Windows Update or Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer but it seems to be fixed. I spoke too soon 8 minutes after making this reply it happened again after opening My Documents folder. Fans and cooling are just fine now im going to check my ram...
Run a virus scan and check for adware. Sometimes those can play a role. If Anything, Backup the stuff you want to keep, then reformat the hard drive to NTFS and reinstall XP.
Now im pretty sure its something with the os registry or something weird with the os. At least I have time to back things up before I reformate.
