Regulars here probably noted my exploding video card saga, and the gimpy replacement I got for it, and the not-so-gimpy replacement I got for that.
Which left me with a spare video card.
I put the XFX up for sale on another forum and... no dice. But someone did offer to trade an ASUS Maximus III Formula and i5-760 combo, known good at 4.3GHz on air, straight across for the 5870. Dollar-for-dollar, I come out about $75 ahead on new hardware with that trade.
So I took it.
My desktop is currently stripped, awaiting the arrival of new parts. (And for record, if there is any reason to not watercool, this is it. Stripping loops is a pain in the ass!) By Tuesday I'll have a new mobo and CPU, with a 560W Seasonic PSU sitting under it all. Replacing an Intel DX48BT2 and QX9650 that have served me well for about two years now. Keeping everything else more or less the same.
Might post pics if I'm not too lazy.

Get MOAR MEGAHURTZ.
You'll love that maximus, extremely good board. I had the pleasure of working with one and it was great all around. Just watch out for your DDR3, alot of the older stuff has a hard time with newer boards.
Sounds like a good deal to me. You should have fun with that i5.
I'd forgotten which GPU you said you did the 2nd upgrade to?
It seems like a really good deal. So what are you going to use instead of that 5870?
I upgraded from a 5870 to a 5870, in the most basic sense. The first one I bought was one of the "rev 2" designs that everyone seems to have: a reference non-reference design that isn't compatible with the block I had at my disposal. Apparently, they're also not overclockable.
What I wound up with was a 2GB "Eyefinity6" 5870, which is essentially the reference layout with some tweaks to the core.
So the new build, substantively, will look thus: Intel Core i5-760 ASUS Maximus III Formula 2x2048MB OCZ Reaper HPC PC3-10666 Sapphire HD 5870 Eyefinity6
The memory, I expect, will work. But possibly not at 1600MHz. We shall see!
