I just build a brand new computer but I didn't want too get a new video card becuase I'm still playing games like Need for speed unground 2 but recently I got sucked into Battlefeild 3 and it was lagging so much that I had too put all the settings down to low and even then it was chugging alot. The video card I have is Geforce 8800 GTX I had that card for years and I spent alot of money on it but I guess it's time to replace it with somthing better.

Depends on budget, the res you play at and what settings you expect, but I would say go with at least a 560 Ti if not better if you can afford it. One 560 Ti can handle anything but Ultra settings at 1920x1080.

Note however that BF3 is not the best game to judge what hardware to buy, as it's been known to do strange things like perform worse on two vs one card. Whenever Nvidia has a hell of a time writing drivers for a game, you know there's something weird with the coding of it and/or it's engine.

In my motherboard manual it says somthing about "sli and crossfire" by adding a second video card I might buy two video cards so I won't have to upgrade for atleast 10 years. I'm thinking of getting two of these bad boys http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130738 I like EVGA my past experince with them were great so my money is on them again.

SLI works better than it used to in most games that use it, but it's far from perfect.

It also won't last you ten years. A GTX 285 SLI setup was matched by a GTX 480 (next generation), and with a new wave of consoles coming in ~2014, you'll need an upgrade sooner than you think.

Well if he's still using an 8800 GT it may well last him that long, or close to it.

Very good point.

OP, for the money you're looking at spending, you're better off just getting a 7970. For the performance, it's a better buy than SLI 460s, and you can add a second one later on if you want.

I have a single GTX 580, and BF3 does not lag at all on highest settings. Going top of the line is one way to make sure you get all the performance you want. ;)

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to disable SLI in certain games that don't like it?

Yes, of course. You can disable or enable SLI anytime you want. The point I and Shroom were making though, is one powerful card will ALWAYS be there for you and be capable enough to run pretty much any game at max settings even at 1920 res.

That said, I was hoping the 580s would have dropped in price by now, as many thought ATI would have their 28nm GPUs out by the end of 2011. There was news of foundry problems causing delays back in Aug, but most thought they'd still be out by the end of the year.
