Nvidia - GeForce 7950 GT is the best one for the price range.

ATi - in the ATi corner, you can get a 256MB GDDR3-equipped Radeon X1950XT, which is using the same GPU as ATi's high-end-til-R600-comes-out X1950XTX, just half the memory and GDDR3 as opposed to higher bandwidth/clock speed GDDR4, and in the price range you're looking at or thereabouts.

Your choice, although the X1950XT is more powerful than the 7950 GT.

Yeah i would agree, a 1950 variant is best bang for buck for 150. Although if you want higher settings in some games it may be worth getting a 1950pro for about 120 and spending thirty quid on another 512 ram so the textures dont suffer at higher settings.

X1950 Pro - 36 Pixel Processors, 12 ROPs

X1950 XT - 48 Pixel Processors, 16 ROPs

Even if only 256MB GDDR3 on the XT I know which one I'd have..... saying that there's no reason I can't afford now either a X1950XTX or a 640MB 8800 GTS. (Thank you nightshifts and may bonus thats coming up and new plans for work)

EDIT: I think 512Mb on mid-range cards is a waste cos it bumps up the price of the card and the GPU won't be able to take advantage of it all.

Of course your right quoting specs but if he has only 1gb ram and wants high settings across the board he will need more ram too. With 150 quid he needs to use a bit of common and reach a compromise somewhere. He will only lose a few frames going for a pro but hell have better perforance overall as his pc will page less often and reduce stuttering almost completely.

I agree with you, but he hasn't mentioned a RAM upgrade. In saying that though he doesn't need high-performance RAM so 2GB of RAM can come at low prices. He should try and stretch his budget a bit more I reckon.
