I use the free Avira AntiVir-scanner and Spybot S&D plus AdAware. If you keep your operating system up to date it works quite well.

>Omen<;3885268I think what you're describing there is definitely an anomaly Merrick. I've used Avast for some time and I have a few friends that use it too and we all agree it updates often and very fast, usually on bootup. It's also one of the most compatible with other software and rarely conflicts with anything. AVG by comparison loads an update screen in the middle of the desktop and shows a graph, very annoying if you ask me. Avast merely has a small popup window in the lower right corner, which only shows right after it updates itself and very briefly. Overall I'd say Avast takes about 3-5 seconds on my system to update itself. AVG can take that long just to launch and remove the update screen, let alone fill the graph. The only thing that USED to be faster about AVG were it's scans, but lately AVG is no faster at that as it's now apporoaching the thoroughness of Avast. Avast will not make scheduled scans, except for one at a time scheduled boot scans, but it catches things so well running real time in the background it's really a non issue.

Have you tried the latest version of Avast? It installs about six background processes. I was disappointed in it.

I have used Avast for some time so haven't needed to install for quite a while. I just update the prog when the green popup says there's a new one. I think what you're describing are the optional parts of Avast like the scheduler, email scanner, VRDB logging, etc. You can set it up anyway you want and you only need have the main part of it as startup for real time protection. I don't even use VDRB logging and consolidate it's icon into the main one. Like everything, you hear lots of complaints, but many of them are born of naivety.;)

OMFG no not 6 background processes! What matters is how much resources they use, not how many there are.

I agree, and I always use FSAutostart anyway before launching resource hungry games. Once configured it will stop and restart all non essential background programs and services automatically with one click.

Lord Wiener;3881676I use the Avira AntiVir Premium Security Suite, which is excellent.

The virus scanner is free, and one of the best, you can get it from AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic - More than Security

I just downloaded the trial version of the Internet Security Suite.. It was good until I restarted my comp lol. Internet is simply not working.. I am connected to my router (wireless) signal is good at 54 Mb/s but I just won't receive any information from the router so when I try to load a website all I see is a white page.. I tried with IE and Msn isn't connecting either. So I uninstalled the program (sadly cause it looked really good) and it's still not working.. :uhm: Maybe it has absolutely nothing to do with this software but I have using the comp just beside my laptop connected to the same Router (wireless) and it's working perfectly.. Any idea how I can fix this :D

I guess my point is that it was using too much memory.

That being said, Avast! ought to be grouping all of its functions under one processes.
